How to make the most of a sports trading card investment?
Q. A friend has been collecting trading cards from all major North American sports leagues for the last 20 years. Most of the purchases were made between 1990 and 2000. These were bulk purchases, several boxes at a time (mostly special edition boxes), and to this date none of them have been opened and they have been well stored. Easily over 200,000 cards in total. Would it be best to open them up, see what treasures are inside and trade them online? Or would it be better to seek out someone who wants to buy them all in one shot, without knowing what's inside?

A. Ok...there is no pat answer, what he has could be garbage or good stuff. First and foremost, have him purchase a magazine called 'Tuff Stuff' ($6 on newsstand). Look for ADS (nothing more) that state "I want to buy in bulk - boxes or cases". It will give basic idea of prices. Some might sell for $25 box, majority $12-30. Card market off since 1990, as over 300 businesses were selling them. In 1987, there were only 4 major card sellers. If he checks with a local source/flea market/etc. cards are worth 40% of retail price they offer. Best to sell in bulk, as more time spent opening each than what they're actually worth. Examples: 1 card per 100 will be worth $1...1 card per 1000 will be worth $4...only 2 or 3 will be worth anything, with… [cont.]

A. There are quite a few pin trading places available. One good resource for pins of all types is the Pintraders Yahoo group at with over 700 members world-wide. There you can find out about pin trading gatherings, use the many links as a research tool to find more, post questions and ask about swap meets in your area. If you collect specific types of pins there are resources for individual types of pins as well. Hard Rock Collector group at which is for all types of HRC collectibles including pins, shot glasses, shirts, etc... Also, at the official site Http://www.hardrock.com there is a pincollectors site. A. Disney pin trading itself has been going on for a while, but the current "Official Disney Pin Traders" pin trading started in the year 2000 at Walt Disney World. Pins were passed out at the parks before 2000 and available for sale, but never traded with Disney cast members officially. Since 2000, and the massive gain in popularity Disney Pin Trading is now available at all Disney Parks(with the exception of a recent suspension in Hong Kong because of counterfeit pins).

A. Well the point of pin trading in my eyes, is to collect pins that you like and mean something to you. There are several different collections of pins which you can purchase and then there are also several collections of pins that can only be traded for because they are "Cast Exclusive Pins," meaning that you can only find them on Cast Members lanyards, and not for purchase in any store. Basically how it works is you purchase some Disney pins (and a lanyard too) first that can be purchased anywhere on Disney property. There are several lanyards available for purchase that have anywhere from 4-8 pins already on them, or you can buy starter sets of just pins, without lanyards (which of course are on sale by themselves all over. They dont charge you but get you to buy them a pin they want for their collection as they are collectors. Wow their collections are fantastic. Also while i was there went to the local disney store which was of international drive and there they where selling a lovely tin with pins in for only $25 about 14 inside where old obsolite pins that they wanted to get rid of. You could not see what you was buying so bit of a lucky dip lol. I took all the doubles into the park and changed them with the disney cast members. The pins worked out about 60p each so a real bargain and definately the best… [cont.]

Are early 90s basketball trading cards worth anything these days?
Q. When I was younger I collected basketball trading cards. I have upper deck, top flight, skybox, fleet, and others. I haven't owned a Beckett in ages. Are these cards worth anything anymore? I have cards of most/close to all the players from that era.

A. Unfortunately the trading card market was oversaturated in the early 90's (and late 80's) in all sports. I've found many a lot on ebay with hundreds and thousands of cards offered from this era that may not even sell for $10 or less (it costs a lot to ship a huge lot of these cards as well)... Your best chance is to sort your collection out by certain players or teams, some individual collectors jump at lots featuring their favorite player or team. You won't be getting much money but it may be more worthwhile than selling the whole thing at once. Make sure to price competitively. Another great site is sportlots.com, you can list your cards individually, it's a lot of work but it's an easy tool for collectors seeking affordable ways to… [cont.]

A. Twice as many of that card were printed. All trading cards are produced on large sheets consisting of several cards that are cut to the single card size. On one or more of those sheets the same card will appear twice for ea. double print.

Does anyone remember collecting pawns? They were little circular cardboard cutouts with pictures on them.?
Q. They were little circular cardboard cut outs in the 90's with pictures of virtually anything on them for kids to collect and trade and it also came with a real heavy pawn to throw on them when playing the actual game?

A. I think you are talking about POGS. Pogs is a game that was popular from the early-to-mid-1990s. The word "pog" also refers to the discs used to play the game. The name originates from POG, a brand of juice made from passionfruit, orange and guava; the use of the POG bottle caps to play the game pre-dated the game's commercialization. The game of pogs originated in Hawaii in the 1920s, and returned to popularity when the Canada Games Company reintroduced them to the public in the 1990s. Pogs became so popular in the 1990s that hundreds of types of pogs were manufactured, covering a wide array of toys, cartoons, movies, games, sports and images of famous people on the front of the pogs. The popularity of the game spawned knockoffs,… [cont.]

Webkinz Question?
Q. Webkinz question...Pleez Answer!? I've collected 16 webkinz, and i dont want any more for right now. But, i'm planning on collecting trading cards. What is the best way to collect trading cards? Pick one, and tell me why. A. Each week, buy a pack of trading cards B. Buy a box of 36 trading card packs I was thinking that buying a box of 36 trading card packs would be a good choice, because then i would win an onnline pet, since 1 out of every 36 packs is a virtual pet. But is there a possibility that i would get doubles of the same pack? Pleez answer! Thanks!
