Phreaking is a slang term coined to describe the activity of a subculture of people who study, experiment with, or explore telecommunication systems, such as equipment and systems connected to public telephone networks. As telephone networks have become computerized, phreaking has become closely linked with computer hacking. This is sometimes called the H/P culture (with H standing for hacking and P standing for phreaking).

The term phreak is a portmanteau of the words phone and freak, and may also refer to the use of various audio frequencies to manipulate a phone system. Phreak, phreaker, or phone phreak are names used for and by individuals who participate in phreaking. A large percentage of the phone Phreaks were blind. Because identities were usually masked, an exact percentage cannot be calculated.

Phone Phreaking What the hell is it?
Q. As a telephone tech I am curious what this is. I had just recently heard of this and haveing a hard time understanding how someone could do this with the current technology. The only thing I have read is talking about the old telephone switches. Yea I have read that its people highjacking on lines, but from what I read, it doesnt make sense how they are criss crossing to different trunks.

A. dialing into a pbx or key system that has an announcer message while on hold, you know when the music is playing and you get the click then hear ringback tone, get excited, only to hear "Thank you for calling, you call is important to us..." . That is a transferred announcement and a lot of them are on single line (analog) extentions. When you get the announcer you flash hook <500ms, and the pbx thinks an anolog user is trying to conference and returns dial tone to you. The announcer device is on hold now and you are free to dial the trunk group access code, normally "9" and dial away. I set each pbx announcer ports to no hookflash and no dial out restriction in my class of services.

Hackers, a moment of your time?
Q. I think I know why its impossible for people to start learning how to hack. Its because no-one actually knows. Sure it was laughably easy in the days of phreaking and telnet, but now its just way too complicated. Am I right? Unfortunately BAS, hackthissite has been closed down. Try to keep up.
Asked by Dominic J - Fri Dec 28 08:38:28 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, your not. Hacking is just know a system inside and out & with that knowledge knowing how to exploit or protect the system. The problem today is most just want the 'hacks' without the work (aka Script Kiddies) that do damage or pwn the system. That is why the media makes 'Hacker' a dirty word. It is not that no one knows, it is that if they wait around someone else will post the 'fix' or 'hack' for them. Laughably easy? Maybe if you found the info posted on some BBS, just what have you hacked that was easy?

harvard system of referecing?
Q. hey i'm writing a report and i want to quote a line off a webpage, how do i put it in my report using the system of harvard referencing. ... By the end of the 1970s there were many thousands of people who practised or studied phone phreaking, which meant when the personal computer started to be introduced in the 1980s there were many people that were already classed as hackers and now they were ready to convert from phones to computers. The word hacker originally meant somebody who enjoyed exploring, playing with, or learning about computers it's written by Phil Lapsley in 2008 off this website

A. Use single quotation marks, and only use double qtn marks when quoting within a quote, similar to your situation. The word hacker originally meant somebody who enjoyed exploring, playing with, or learning about computers (Lapsley 2008). Reference list entry. The title is in italics, and only capitalise names etc. You can choose either to use the web address for the specific page the quote is on, or the home page of the site: Lapsley, Phil 2008. Title of Web page in italics, viewed 24 November 2008, < >. Best, RH www.referencinghelp.info
